Ingredients

  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 4 peppercorns
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • Zest/peel of 1/4 orange
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp raisins soaked in rum
  • 1 tbsp slivered almonds
  • 6 oz dry or semi-sweet white wine
  • 1 cup apple cider

Instructions

  1. Combine the cardamom, peppercorns, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, brown sugar, orange peel, and water in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves and let the mixture simmer for 1-1.5 hours, covered.
  2. Strain the extract and store in a bottle in the fridge if not using immediately.
  3. Heat the apple cider in a large pot, then turn off the stove and add the wine, extract, soaked raisins, and remaining rum.
  4. Heat the wine mixture until just hot enough, avoiding boiling. Once the edges start to bubble, it's ready.
  5. Add slivered almonds to the bottom of a mug, then ladle the wine and raisins into the mug. Enjoy!
