Ingredients

  • 3/5 cup water
  • 3/5 cup cranberries (2.4 oz bag)
  • 3/5 cup red wine (use shiraz, if possible)
  • 1/5 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 4 bags of Mulling Spice (Kauffman's brand)
  • fine mesh sieve
  • paper towels

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine water and cranberries. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for about 25 minutes until the cranberries have softened.
  2. Strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve, pressing down on the berries to release all the juice. Discard the berries.
  3. If needed, strain the juice again by pouring it over a paper towel-lined sieve.
  4. Return the juice to the saucepan and add wine, sugar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until all the sugar has dissolved, stirring often.
  5. Remove from heat and add the mulling spice bags. Let them steep for 3-5 minutes, then taste and adjust the spice level if needed.
  6. Make any final adjustments to the sweetness or wine content according to your preference.
  7. Serve warm or cold and enjoy. This mulled wine can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge. Reheat before serving.
