Ingredients
- 3/5 cup water
- 3/5 cup cranberries (2.4 oz bag)
- 3/5 cup red wine (use shiraz, if possible)
- 1/5 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 4 bags of Mulling Spice (Kauffman's brand)
- fine mesh sieve
- paper towels
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, combine water and cranberries. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for about 25 minutes until the cranberries have softened.
- Strain the juice through a fine mesh sieve, pressing down on the berries to release all the juice. Discard the berries.
- If needed, strain the juice again by pouring it over a paper towel-lined sieve.
- Return the juice to the saucepan and add wine, sugar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until all the sugar has dissolved, stirring often.
- Remove from heat and add the mulling spice bags. Let them steep for 3-5 minutes, then taste and adjust the spice level if needed.
- Make any final adjustments to the sweetness or wine content according to your preference.
- Serve warm or cold and enjoy. This mulled wine can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge. Reheat before serving.
