Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges
  • 1/4 orange, sliced into thin rounds
  • 2 1/4 oz London dry gin (such as Beefeater or Tanqueray)
  • 3/4 oz off-dry Sherry (such as Lustau East India Solera)
  • 1 mint sprig
  • crushed ice

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, bring sugar and 2 1/4 teaspoons of water to a boil. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then remove from heat. Refrigerate the remaining syrup for later use, leaving 3/4 cup of it.
  2. Heat the syrup in the pan almost to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium. Add cranberries and simmer until they just begin to burst, for about 2-3 minutes. Let the mixture cool in the syrup.
  3. In a pitcher, combine 2 tablespoons of drained cranberries, 6 tablespoons of cranberry syrup, lemon wedges, and orange slices. Use a muddler or wooden spoon to vigorously mash the fruit. Stir in gin and Sherry, and let it steep for 5 minutes.
  4. Strain the mixture into another pitcher. Fill a glass with crushed ice and pour half of the mixture into a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into the prepared glass and mound with more crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and 3 cranberries. Repeat to make 3 more cocktails.
