Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/16 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch of cloves
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • whipped cream (optional)
  • extra ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk, cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves over medium/medium-low heat, whisking frequently until almost boiling.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and sugar until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking thoroughly between each addition.
  4. Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook, while constantly whisking, until it reaches 160 degrees F and slightly thickens.
  5. Remove from heat, whisk in the vanilla, and serve with whipped cream and a light dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg.
