Ingredients

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon
  • Additional freshly grated nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and sugar until thick and lemon colored.
  2. In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the milk and 1 cup of whipping cream. Add the yolk mixture and stir well.
  3. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture coats a metal spoon.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg.
  5. Place the saucepan in cold water until the custard is cool, stirring occasionally. Then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours but no longer than 24 hours.
  6. Just before serving, stir the bourbon into the chilled custard.
  7. In a chilled small bowl, beat the remaining 1 cup of whipping cream with an electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form.
  8. Gently stir the whipped cream into the custard.
  9. Sprinkle with additional nutmeg and serve, or refrigerate until serving time.
