Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup chilled milk
  • 1/2 cup chilled heavy cream
  • 1/2 oz bourbon (optional) or additional 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • Fresh or ground nutmeg for serving

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg and add the yolk to a medium-sized bowl. Whisk in the sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  2. In a pot over medium heat, warm the milk and heavy cream until it is about to boil. Remove from heat.
  3. Slowly add a tablespoon of the warm milk to the egg mixture, whisking quickly. Repeat this process twice more to temper the eggs.
  4. Once the eggs are at temperature, whisk the egg mixture into the pot of milk and combine.
  5. Stir in the bourbon (if using), vanilla, and salt, then serve.
  6. In a separate bowl, beat the remaining egg white and 1/2 tablespoon of sugar until stiff peaks form.
  7. Pour the eggnog into a glass, spoon meringue on top, sprinkle with nutmeg, and serve.
