- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg white from the yolk, placing the yolk in a medium mixing bowl.
- Whisk sugar into the egg yolk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, cream, and nutmeg until steaming, but not boiling.
- Temper the egg mixture by slowly adding the hot milk to the egg mixture and whisking continuously.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens, ensuring it does not boil.
