Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg white from the yolk, placing the yolk in a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk sugar into the egg yolk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk, cream, and nutmeg until steaming, but not boiling.
  4. Temper the egg mixture by slowly adding the hot milk to the egg mixture and whisking continuously.
  5. Return the mixture to the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens, ensuring it does not boil.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract and bourbon, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour to cool.
  7. Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
