Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 12 strips lemon zest
  • 6 fresh mint leaves
  • Crushed ice
  • 2 ounces bourbon

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat sugar, lemon zest, and water over high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool for 20 minutes. Then remove the lemon zest and let the syrup cool completely. It can be refrigerated for up to 1 week. (Makes 1 1/2 cups.)
  3. In a julep cup, muddle the mint leaves with 1 tablespoon of the lemon syrup until the mint starts to break down.
  4. Add the bourbon and fill the cup with ice, stirring until well chilled.
  5. Top with more ice and garnish with a sprig of mint.
