Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup cranberries (4 oz)
  • 3/4 cup red wine (shiraz)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 bag of Mulling Spice
  • fine mesh sieve
  • paper towels

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine water and cranberries. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for about 25 minutes until the cranberries have softened and "popped".
  2. Strain the cranberry juice through a fine mesh sieve, pressing the berries to release all the juice. If needed, strain the juice again through a paper towel-lined sieve.
  3. Return the juice to the saucepan and add the wine, sugar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the sugar has dissolved.
  4. Remove from heat and add the mulling spice. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes, tasting after 3 minutes and steeping longer if desired.
  5. Make any necessary adjustments, such as adding more sugar or wine.
  6. Serve warm or cold and enjoy. The mulled wine can be made ahead and stored in the fridge, and reheated when ready to serve.
