Ingredients

  • A pinch of saffron strands
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • 1 tablespoon ground sumac
  • 3/4 cup chilled club soda or water
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Grind the saffron with 2 tablespoons of sugar to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, sugar, crushed cardamom, and saffron mixture. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in the sumac. Cover the saucepan and let it steep for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a medium bowl and chill.
  3. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  4. In a large pitcher, stir the syrup with the chilled club soda or water.
  5. Pour the drink into the glass and garnish with a few saffron strands.
  6. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to a week.
