Ingredients

  • 1/4 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1/4 orange, cut into quarters
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • a pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons rum, dark rum, or bourbon (optional)
  • Garnishes: whipped cream, cinnamon stick, apple slice, peppermint stick (for non-alcoholic version)

Instructions

  1. Cut the orange into quarters and push the whole cloves into one of the quarters.
  2. In a small saucepan, place the clove-studded orange quarter and pour the apple cider over it.
  3. Add the light brown sugar and spices, then bring the mixture to a boil.
  4. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. If adding rum or bourbon, pour it into the spiced apple cider before pouring into a mug.
  6. Divide the cider between two mugs and garnish with whipped cream, a sprinkle of nutmeg, a slice of apple, and a cinnamon stick. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the liquor and add a peppermint stick to the glass.
