Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 whole cloves
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • 5 oz full-bodied red wine
  • 1/4-inch ginger, peeled and bruised
  • 1 whole star anise
  • 1/2 vanilla pod
  • 10 allspice berries
  • 5 black peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. In a nonreactive, heavy pot, combine sugar, citrus zest, orange juice, and spices.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until the sugar is dissolved and an aromatic syrup forms (about 4 to 5 minutes).
  3. Lower the heat to low and add the wine.
  4. Bring to a bare simmer and continue over low heat for about 15 minutes until the wine is flavorful, but do not let it boil.
  5. Strain and pour into a mug or heat-resistant glass.
  6. Garnish with an orange slice or cinnamon stick if desired. Serve steaming hot.
